A new low diffraction baffle has also been invented for this speaker, which has such complex curved surfaces, that SpeakerCraft's engineering team could not rely on conventional computer aided design programs to create the unique surface. A superior new sound dampening material (much more impenetrable than standard plastic) is combined with the unique shape to create an ultra dense mounting surface for the drivers. These advances in architectural speaker technology are the 8.5MIT's cornerstones for high performance.

Other SpeakerCraft technologies such as easily switchable, front mounted controls (to tailor frequency response), the patented I-BeamTM installation system, and mirror image technology are also incorporated.

Both the pivoting midrange and tweeter are domes, which have a wider dispersion pattern and provide a wider sweet spot than cones. The tweeter is a 3/4" titanium dome and the midrange is a 2" treated textile dome. Both use Ferrofluid immersed voice coils and neodymium magnets. They deliver extremely accurate sonic reproduction with the benefits of a much wider sound stage. This feature is a huge advancement for in-wall speakers since they have never been able to be "toed-in" like conventional freestanding speakers. In-walls can now be used for front channel and critical listening situations. After years of concentrated R and D efforts SpeakerCraft has solved every problem or hurdle that has stood in the way of creating a high end in-wall speaker. The 8.5MIT is no doubt the World's most technically advanced and best sounding in-wall speaker system. The Uni-Pivot is one of the most installer friendly features since our idea for the pivoting foot I-Beam mounting system back in 1993.

After years of research, and manufacturing experience (nearly 3.5 million in-walls to date) SpeakerCraft engineers solved a major problem with in-wall speakers... the wall. A new in-wall treatment creates an acoustic chamber which allows the woofer to produce sustainable deep bass frequencies. It eliminates reverse phase cancellation caused by sound waves from the rear of the speaker passing through the drywall and mixing with and canceling those from the front of the speaker. Also, this radical new treatment virtually eliminates Helmholtz resonance and standing waves, and at the same time subdues out-of-phase drywall resonance, allowing extended and "tighter" bass to reach the listener. Further, layers of mass loaded dampening material reduce the transmission of sound into adjacent rooms.

The 8.5MIT's frequency response is 30Hz to 22kHz. The paintable, u/v resistant, white baffle is impregnated with a heavy mineral. This is the first mineral filled baffle in the industry, it's heavy mass becomes a stable surface for sound waves to source from. The baffle is much denser than the usual ABS plastic and drywall used on nearly all in-wall speakers. On the surface of the baffle are adjustable, front mounted switches with plus or minus 3dB of adjustment for the woofer, midrange and tweeter response. Giving the installer the ability to fine tune each speaker to the specific room acoustics or users personal listing taste.

Installation is easy with the Patented I-BeamTM mounting system which provides a secure and level clamp to the wall; this is accomplished with just six screws which are tightened through the front of the baffle.

The 8" dual voice coil woofer uses a low mass, braided, glass fiber cone with a butyl rubber surround and a 1.5 " Kapton voice coil. Glass fiber is the most advanced speaker cone to date, providing an extreme rigidity, and tight low bass performance.

The revolutionary 8.5MIT can handle 120Watts of power (rms.), has a nominal impedance of 6 or 4 ohms depending on switch settings. Efficiency is rated at 92dB /W/1m. The 8.5MIT system has a suggested retail of $1350.
